Viticcio

Viticcio is a group of five small coves about 6 km from Portoferraio, divided by pine-covered cliffs and made up of smooth gravel and pebbles rather than sand. There are no facilities directly on the beaches - just wild, unspoiled coastline reached by a rough path down from the parking area. It suits confident walkers looking for privacy over convenience.

Viticcio takes its name from the wider gulf it sits within, on the coast between Portoferraio and Enfola. Rather than one continuous beach, it's a set of five small coves separated by cliffs covered in pines and Mediterranean scrub, each with its own patch of smooth gravel mixed with pebbles and small stones in shades of grey. Getting there involves more than just a walk from the car park: the path starts beyond the parking area, past Hotel Scoglio Bianco and behind a restaurant, and includes broken steps and a rope to help with the steeper sections. It's not a beach for strollers, flip-flops or anyone unsteady on rough terrain - good footwear and reasonable fitness are genuinely necessary here. There are no services on the beaches themselves - no rentals, no bar on the sand - though restaurants and bars belonging to the nearby hotels sit up on the road. Parking is limited to around 25 spaces near the entrance plus some further up the hill, all free but tight in peak season. Viticcio suits anyone who wants genuine quiet and a sense of having found somewhere off the main circuit, in exchange for a rougher walk in and no facilities once you arrive - not a beach for an easy family day out.
