La Sorgente

A quiet white-pebble cove beside Sansone, sharing the same clear water and cliffs.

Overview

La Sorgente sits on Elba's northern coast right next to Sansone, reached via the same path from the Portoferraio-Enfola road. It's a small, wild beach of smooth white pebbles set beneath the same pale cliffs, with water just as clear as its more famous neighbour. Because most visitors continue on to Sansone, Sorgente often stays noticeably quieter.

Good for

Public access

Free public beach with no entry fee. It's reached via the same path from the Portoferraio-Enfola road used for Sansone - narrow and uneven in places, around a 10-minute walk.

Beach clubs available: No — this is mainly a free/public or natural beach.

There's no umbrella or sunbed rental directly on this beach. A bar along the access path (near the Sansone Reef area) offers drinks and light food, but the beach itself is unserviced.

How to get there

By train: No direct train access. Elba has no railway, so this beach is not reachable by train.

By bus: There's no bus stop at the beach. Most visitors reach it by car via the Enfola road, on the same path used for Sansone.

Parking: By car: Follow the Portoferraio-Enfola provincial road for around 4.5 km to the same parking area used for Sansone. Parking is shared with Sansone - a small paid car park plus free roadside spaces, both of which fill early in summer.

On foot: From the roadside parking, the same path used for Sansone leads down through rock and scrub; Sorgente is reached first, before the path continues on to Sansone.

Facilities

There's no rental point on the beach itself, unlike Sansone. A bar along the shared access path offers drinks and light food.

Practical tips

Most people walk straight past Sorgente on their way to Sansone, so stopping here first often means having the same clear water and white cliffs largely to yourself. There's no rental kiosk on this beach, so bring your own umbrella if you want shade.

More about La Sorgente

La Sorgente is easy to overlook, since most people walking the path down from the Portoferraio-Enfola road are headed for Sansone, the more photographed beach just around the coast. But Sorgente shares the same white cliffs, the same smooth white pebbles and the same exceptionally clear water - and because it's the first beach you reach rather than the destination, it tends to be quieter. The cove is small, around 80 metres of shoreline, tucked between the pale rock formations typical of this stretch of coast. Like Sansone, the water here is at its clearest on days with a light sirocco wind, turning the cove into a natural, calm pool that's excellent for swimming. Unlike Sansone, there's no rental point on the beach itself for umbrellas or sunbeds - if you want that kind of set-up, Sansone's small seasonal concession is a short walk further on. Sorgente does have a bar along the access path (by the Sansone Reef area) offering drinks and light food, so it's not entirely without services, just simpler than its neighbour. Sorgente works well for anyone who wants Sansone's scenery and water clarity without quite the same crowds - it's less about being a separate destination and more about stopping at the first cove instead of walking on to the second.
