Sandy vs Pebble Beaches on Elba: Which to Choose

Elba's beaches split fairly clearly by texture: soft sand on the south and west coasts, pale pebbles near Portoferraio, and one dark, mixed exception at Innamorata.

Elba's beaches aren't uniform, the island's granite geology means the texture underfoot changes noticeably from one coast to the next. Broadly, the south and west coasts around Campo nell'Elba and Capoliveri tend toward fine sand, while the beaches closer to Portoferraio, beneath white cliffs, are pebble. One beach, Innamorata, sits in between with a mix of dark sand and small pebbles. If you're deciding where to spend a beach day and texture matters to you, here's how Elba's beaches actually split.

Elba's Sandy Beaches

Biodola, Cavoli, Fetovaia, Lacona, Marina di Campo and Procchio are all genuine sand beaches, though the shade and coarseness vary: Fetovaia and Procchio are fine and pale, Cavoli is slightly coarser and golden, and Marina di Campo and Lacona are both long, soft stretches. These are generally the more comfortable options for sitting or walking barefoot, and the more common choice for families.

Elba's Pebble Beaches

Spiaggia di Sansone, La Sorgente and Le Ghiaie are all pebble beaches, pale and smooth near Portoferraio and Capo Bianco. Pebbles mean clearer water in general, since there's less sand to cloud it, which is part of why Sansone and La Sorgente are so well regarded for snorkelling. Water shoes are worth packing for all three.

Innamorata: Dark Sand and Pebbles Mixed

Innamorata doesn't fit neatly into either category: the shoreline is dark sand mixed with small pebbles, a noticeably different look from the pale sand and pebbles found elsewhere on the island. It's near Capoliveri, south of Monte Calamita. - Best for: a different-looking beach if you've already seen Elba's paler coves. - Good to know: the mixed shoreline means water shoes are worth having, same as at the pebble beaches.

Which Texture Should You Choose?

If comfort underfoot and barefoot walking matter most, stick to the sandy beaches, Fetovaia and Procchio for a smaller cove, Marina di Campo or Lacona for more space. If clear water and snorkelling are the priority, the pebble beaches near Portoferraio, especially Sansone and La Sorgente, are the better choice, just pack water shoes. Innamorata is worth a visit either way, simply for looking different from the rest of the island.
