Spiaggia della Padulella

Padulella is a small, little-publicised cove just outside Portoferraio, reached by a short path down from a patch of unpaved parking near the old Roman villa ruins at Le Grotte. It's a beach known mainly to residents and regular visitors rather than day-trippers, valued for its clear, quickly-deepening water rather than for wide sand or facilities.

Padulella sits on Elba's northern coast a short drive from central Portoferraio, in the same stretch of coastline as the Roman-era villa remains at Le Grotte. The cove is narrow, framed by rock, with a mix of pebble and coarse sand underfoot and a seabed that shelves quickly into deep, very clear water — one of the reasons it's popular with locals for a quick swim or snorkel rather than a full beach day. There's no promenade or built-up beach front here: access is on foot down an unofficial path from a small unpaved parking area, and there's little in the way of shade beyond the surrounding rock. Because it isn't signposted or promoted the way Elba's larger resort beaches are, Padulella tends to stay uncrowded even in August, though it can fill up on a Sunday with locals. Anyone visiting should bring their own water, shade and supplies, since there's nothing sold on site, and take care on the access path, which is uneven in places.
