Overview

Spiaggia di Sansone sits on Elba's northern coast, a few minutes from Portoferraio beneath the pale cliffs of Capo Bianco. It's one of the island's best-known beaches, prized for small white pebbles, strikingly clear water and excellent snorkelling among the rocks. It suits confident swimmers and snorkellers more than families after an easy day out, since reaching the beach means walking down a steep path.

Good for

Public access

Free public beach with no entry fee, but access takes some effort. From the parking area along the Portoferraio-Enfola road, a signed path leads down through rock and scrub to the shore - around a 10-minute walk that is narrow and steep in places.

Beach clubs available: Limited or seasonal — sunbeds and umbrellas may be available in summer.

There's no full beach club directly on the sand. A small seasonal concession rents umbrellas, sunbeds and pedal boats/canoes on the beach in summer, and there's a separate bar and restaurant near the top of the access path rather than on the shore itself. Don't count on getting a sunbed without arriving early in peak season.

How to get there

By train: No direct train access. Elba has no railway, so this beach is not reachable by train.

By bus: There's no bus stop at the beach itself. Local ATL buses run along nearby routes from Portoferraio, but you'd still need to walk the same path down from the road, so most visitors come by car, scooter or boat.

Parking: By car: The most straightforward option. Follow the Portoferraio-Enfola provincial road for roughly 4-4.5 km to the marked parking area for Sansone. Space is limited and in high demand in summer. There's a small paid car park close to the path, plus free roadside spaces nearby that fill up early on summer mornings.

On foot: From the roadside parking, a signed path drops down through rock and scrubland to the beach, taking around 10 minutes. It's narrow and uneven in places, so wear proper shoes rather than sandals.

Facilities

Facilities are minimal and largely seasonal. Expect a small rental point for umbrellas, sunbeds and pedal boats on the beach in summer, and a bar/restaurant near the top of the path rather than on the sand.

Practical tips

Snorkelling is best among the rocks toward Sorgente on the right, where the crevices hold the most fish; the sea stack on the left is more a kayak landmark than a swimming spot. The water is at its clearest on days with a light scirocco (south) wind, and noticeably choppier when the wind sits in a different direction.

More about Spiaggia di Sansone

Spiaggia di Sansone is one of the best-known beaches on Elba's northern coast, set beneath the pale cliffs of Capo Bianco a short drive from Portoferraio. The shoreline is made up of small white pebbles rather than sand, and the water is famous for its clarity - on calm days it takes on a bright turquoise colour that makes the beach one of the most photographed spots on the island. The setting feels more wild than manicured. A rocky outcrop separates Sansone from the neighbouring Sorgente beach, and the cliffs and crevices along the shore attract plenty of small fish, making this one of the best snorkelling spots on Elba. Strong swimmers sometimes make the longer swim out to a natural rock arch further along the coast, though this is only for confident swimmers in calm conditions, not a casual paddle. Getting to Sansone takes a bit more effort than most beaches nearby. There's no road down to the shore - visitors park along the provincial road between Portoferraio and Enfola, then follow a narrow path down through rock and scrubland for around ten minutes. The walk is scenic but uneven in places, which makes the beach less practical for young children, strollers or anyone with limited mobility. In July and August, Sansone gets genuinely busy. Both the small paid car park and the limited roadside parking fill up early, and the beach itself is fairly compact, so space on the pebbles can feel tight by mid-morning. Outside peak season - especially in May, June or September - it's a much calmer place to spend a few hours swimming and snorkelling. Facilities are limited and mostly seasonal: a small rental point for umbrellas, sunbeds and pedal boats operates on the beach in summer, and there's a bar and restaurant near the top of the access path rather than directly on the sand. It isn't the beach to choose if you want guaranteed sunbeds, full shade or an easy stroll from the car - but if you don't mind the walk and want some of the clearest water and best snorkelling on Elba, Sansone is hard to beat.
