Night Swimming and Evening Beaches on Elba Island

Most beach guides stop at sunset, but a few spots on Elba are worth knowing about after dark too. One beach is genuinely set up for swimming at night, another has a real evening scene with music, and a third simply stays lively because a town sits right behind it. None of this is about nightlife on the scale of a big resort destination, just a few beaches worth factoring into an evening plan rather than leaving behind at 6pm.
Le Ghiaie: Elba's Only Beach Lit for Night Swimming
Since 2016, Le Ghiaie has been lit in the evening specifically to allow night swimming, a genuine rarity on Elba and one of the few beaches anywhere on the island set up for an after-dark dip. Its location, a short walk from Portoferraio's old town, makes it easy to combine with dinner.
- Best for: a swim after dinner without needing a car or a torch.
- Good to know: the beach is busiest during the day given its central location, but noticeably calmer once evening comes.
Cavoli: Beach Parties and DJ Sets
Cavoli has a livelier reputation than most Elba beaches, with beach parties and DJ sets a regular summer feature at the beachside venue Il Convio. It's the closest thing on the island to a proper beach-club evening scene.
- Best for: music, energy and a later finish to the beach day.
- Good to know: event nights and schedules vary through the season, so check locally for what's on before planning around it.
Marina di Campo: A Lively Seafront After Dark
Marina di Campo isn't a nightlife destination in the way Cavoli is, but because the town runs the full length of the beach, its promenade stays genuinely lively into the evening, with restaurants, gelaterie and shops open well past sunset.
- Best for: an evening stroll and dinner by the sand without leaving the beach town.
- Good to know: this is more about atmosphere than swimming after dark, unlike Le Ghiaie.
Planning an Evening Around the Beach
If an actual swim after dark is the goal, Le Ghiaie is the one beach on Elba built for it. If you want music and a livelier crowd, Cavoli's evening scene is the closest thing the island has to a beach party. And if you'd simply rather not rush off the sand at sunset, Marina di Campo's seafront keeps the evening going without any special planning required.
