La Sorgente, the quiet cove beside Sansone near Portoferraio, is worth revisiting in the evening rather than only at midday. Once the day-trip crowd heading for Sansone has thinned out, the same white pebbles and clear water make for a calmer, more atmospheric spot to watch the light change over the water.

Innamorata: Sunset With a Local Legend
Innamorata, near Capoliveri, pairs its evening light with the 16th-century legend that gives the beach its name, still marked every July with a torchlight procession along the sand. The two small Gemini islets just offshore make a striking silhouette as the light fades.

The village's cafés and beach clubs stay open into the evening if you want to make a night of it.

If you're staying nearer Portoferraio, La Sorgente offers the same clear water as Sansone with none of the daytime crowds once evening comes. And if you want a bit of local legend along with your evening swim, Innamorata near Capoliveri is worth the drive.
