Where to snorkel on Elba Island: the exceptionally clear water and rocky shoreline at Sansone, its quieter neighbour La Sorgente, and the islet-studded cove of Innamorata.

Elba's granite coastline and clear water make it one of the better snorkelling destinations in the Tuscan Archipelago, and three beaches in particular stand out: two neighbouring pebble coves beneath white cliffs on the north coast, and a beach in the south with two small islets just offshore. None of these are dive centres or organised snorkelling spots, just beaches where the water clarity and underwater terrain happen to be better than average. Bring your own mask and fins, since equipment rental isn't guaranteed at any of them.

La Sorgente shares Sansone's cliffs and clarity but stays quieter, since it's the first cove on the path rather than the destination most people are aiming for. The water is exceptionally clear here too, especially on calm days with a light sirocco wind. - Best for: a quieter snorkel with similar conditions to Sansone. - Good to know: there's no rental kiosk on this beach, so come equipped.

Innamorata: Snorkelling Around the Gemini Islets

Innamorata's clear water and two small offshore islets, known as the Gemini, give it a different kind of snorkelling appeal: less about a single dramatic reef, more about a scenic swim out to a landmark. The islets are close enough to reach by swimming or pedal boat. - Best for: a snorkel with a destination, rather than just drifting along a shoreline. - Good to know: pedal boats and canoes are available to rent at the beach clubs if you'd rather not swim the whole way out.

Which Snorkelling Beach Should You Choose?

For the most reliable water clarity and the richest underwater terrain, Sansone is the standard choice, though it's also the busiest. If you want the same conditions with more space, head to La Sorgente instead. Innamorata suits a different kind of outing, a scenic swim to the Gemini islets rather than exploring rocky crevices, and it's the easiest of the three to reach with a car.
