Best Beaches for Snorkelling in Puglia
Where to snorkel in Puglia: the natural pool at Grotta della Poesia, the protected reserve at Torre Guaceto, rocky coves at Punta della Suina, and more.
Puglia's clearest water tends to show up where the coast is rockiest or most protected: a natural pool cut into limestone, a marine reserve with seagrass meadows, and a scatter of small coves among the rocks. None of these are dive centres, just beaches where the underwater scenery happens to be better than average.
Bring your own mask and fins where you can - equipment rental is inconsistent across these spots, and a couple require planning ahead.
Torre Guaceto

Torre Guaceto is a protected marine reserve with transparent, turquoise water and Posidonia oceanica meadows on the seabed, generally considered one of the best snorkelling and diving spots on this part of the Adriatic. Access is by paid shuttle only, since private cars aren't allowed inside the reserve.
- Best for: the richest underwater scenery, in a genuinely protected, uncrowded setting.
- Good to know: budget for the entry fee and shuttle as part of the visit, not an optional extra.
Grotta della Poesia

This natural limestone pool near Roca Vecchia, connected to the open sea by an underwater tunnel, is exceptionally clear and a genuinely unusual place to snorkel - part swimming pool, part sea cave. Diving in is prohibited, so enter via the stone steps.
- Best for: a short, striking snorkel in a landmark natural pool.
- Good to know: it's small and famous, so arrive early before the crowds build.
Punta della Suina
South of Gallipoli, Punta della Suina's string of small rocky coves has calm, clear water throughout, ranked among Europe's most beautiful beaches by international press. It's a good middle ground between a wild snorkelling spot and a comfortable beach day.
- Best for: exploring several small coves in one visit, with facilities nearby if you want a break.
- Good to know: if one cove looks busy, the pine path usually leads to a quieter one close by.
Torre San Giovanni

A lighthouse splits Torre San Giovanni into a rockier northern half, better for snorkelling, and a sandier southern half. Diving equipment is available to rent locally, alongside pedal boats and canoes.
- Best for: a beach that offers snorkelling and an easy sandy swim in one place.
- Good to know: head north of the lighthouse specifically for the rockier, clearer-view stretch.
Baia delle Zagare

On the Gargano coast, Baia delle Zagare's clear water sits beneath two dramatic limestone sea stacks. Strong swimmers sometimes circle the base of the larger stack, a genuine 20-minute swim rather than a casual snorkel.
- Best for: snorkelling with dramatic scenery, if you're a confident swimmer.
- Good to know: public access is capped at 30 permits a day from June to September; a boat trip bypasses the limit entirely.
Which Spot Should You Choose?
For the richest marine life and the most protected setting, Torre Guaceto is the standout, though it takes the most planning given the shuttle-only access. Grotta della Poesia is worth it for the novelty of the natural pool alone, even if the swim itself is short. Punta della Suina and Torre San Giovanni are the more relaxed, family-friendly options, and Baia delle Zagare is for confident swimmers chasing dramatic scenery over easy access.
