Best Beaches on the Gargano Coast, Puglia

The Gargano peninsula's best beaches: Vieste's landmark Pizzomunno sands, Peschici's sheltered San Nicola bay, and the dramatic, permit-limited cove of Baia delle Zagare.

The Gargano peninsula, the "spur" on Italy's boot, has a different character from the rest of Puglia's coast: white limestone cliffs, pine forest and dramatic sea stacks instead of long, flat sand. There's no railway reaching most of this coast, and several beaches involve a proper walk or a permit rather than a simple park-and-swim. This guide covers the three Gargano beaches documented so far, one in each of the peninsula's main towns.

Vieste: Pizzomunno

Pizzomunno is Vieste's main beach, a roughly 2 km stretch of golden sand named after the 25-metre limestone sea stack marking its northern end, tied to local legend about a fisherman turned to stone. It's genuinely well equipped for a peninsula beach - showers, playgrounds, lifeguards and sunbed hire are all present. - Best for: an easy, well-serviced beach day within walking distance of Vieste's town centre. - Good to know: there's no dedicated car park, so street parking near the entrances fills early in summer.

Peschici: San Nicola

San Nicola is a sheltered, 600-metre sandy bay a short drive from Peschici, framed by a natural sea cave to the east and a traditional wooden trabucco fishing platform to the west. The shallow, gently sloping water makes it a solid family choice. - Best for: families, and a bit more visual character than a plain stretch of sand. - Good to know: this is a car-access beach with one main parking area, so arrive by mid-morning in summer.

Between Vieste and Mattinata: Baia delle Zagare

Baia delle Zagare is the Gargano's most dramatic cove, a small beach beneath towering cliffs framed by two limestone sea stacks, the faraglioni. Access is genuinely limited: a daily permit system caps public visitors at 30 between June and September, with a steep path down from the coastal road the only walk-in route. - Best for: dramatic scenery and photos, if you're willing to plan around the permit system. - Good to know: boat tours from Vieste or Mattinata reach the bay without needing a permit at all.

Getting Around the Gargano

None of Gargano's beaches have a nearby train station - the peninsula's rail options don't reach this stretch of coast, so a car, scooter or organised tour is the practical way to get around. Vieste and Peschici are both straightforward drives with normal parking, while Baia delle Zagare needs advance planning around its permit system or a boat trip instead. If you only have time for one, Pizzomunno is the easiest and most complete beach day; Baia delle Zagare is worth the extra effort for scenery alone.
