Grotta della Poesia

A natural rock pool and sea cave near Roca Vecchia, often called one of the world's most beautiful swimming spots.

Overview

Grotta della Poesia is a natural limestone pool connected to the sea by an underwater tunnel, set within an archaeological park at Roca Vecchia on Salento's Adriatic coast. It's known for strikingly clear water and a smaller, adjoining cave pool, both popular for swimming rather than sunbathing. Diving or jumping into the pool is prohibited for safety and conservation reasons, so this is a spot for swimming and snorkelling rather than cliff-jumping.

Good for

Public access

Entry to the archaeological park costs a few euros; from there it's a short walk to the pool, with stone steps down to the water rather than a sandy shore.

Beach clubs available: No — this is mainly a free/public or natural beach.

There's no beach club or sunbed rental here - this is a natural swimming site within an archaeological park, not a lido beach.

How to get there

By train: There's no direct train station nearby; the nearest mainline stations are in Lecce, from where you'd continue by car, taxi or bus.

By bus: Seasonal buses connect Lecce with Melendugno and the Roca Vecchia area in summer.

Parking: By car: From Lecce, take the SP366 towards Melendugno; Roca Vecchia and Grotta della Poesia are signed between San Foca and Torre dell'Orso. Large paid parking areas serve the site, a short walk from the entrance.

On foot: From the parking areas, it's a short walk into the archaeological park and down stone steps to the pool.

Facilities

There are small kiosks and public toilets near the park entrance, but no services down at the water itself - guided tours covering the site's history are also available.

Practical tips

Diving into the pool is prohibited, so plan on entering via the stone steps rather than jumping, whatever you may have seen in photos. Arrive early - this is a small, singular site rather than a wide beach, and it fills up fast once the day gets going in summer.

More about Grotta della Poesia

Grotta della Poesia sits within the archaeological site of Roca Vecchia, between the villages of San Foca and Torre dell'Orso. The name is thought to come from the Greek term for a fountain or spring, rather than the Italian word for poetry - though the setting is dramatic enough that the poetic name has stuck regardless. The main attraction is the pool itself: a natural sinkhole in the limestone, connected to the open sea by an underwater passage, with water so clear it's often described as one of the most beautiful natural swimming pools in the world. A smaller adjoining cave, Grotta della Poesia Piccola, offers a similar experience on a more intimate scale. Access to the water is via stone steps rather than jumping - diving into the pool is currently prohibited to protect both visitors and the archaeological site, despite it once being a popular (and risky) tradition. Snorkelling inside the pool, exploring the underwater tunnel connections and general swimming are the main activities here. There are small kiosks and public toilets near the entrance to the archaeological park, and admission to the site costs a few euros, but once you're down at the water there's nothing beyond what you carry in. Grotta della Poesia rewards an early or off-peak visit - it's a small, singular attraction rather than a wide beach, and it fills up fast once word gets around on a summer day.
