San Salvo Marina

San Salvo Marina is a broad sandy beach at the very southern tip of the Abruzzo coast, just before the regional border with Molise. It shares the same fine sand and gently sloping seabed as neighbouring Vasto Marina, but with a smaller-scale, more local feel, since San Salvo's beach town developed later and stayed less built-up than the bigger resorts further north.

San Salvo Marina grew as the coastal extension of the inland town of San Salvo, historically better known for its shoe-manufacturing industry than tourism, and that lower profile still shows in a beach that feels less packaged than some of its neighbours. The sand is wide and fine, continuous with the beach at Vasto Marina just to the north, and the seabed stays shallow for a good distance out, making it a comfortable swim for children.\n\nA mix of beach concessions and free public stretches lines the shore, with a seafront promenade and cycle path connecting San Salvo Marina to Vasto and, across the Molise border, to Termoli further south. The beach's position at the edge of two regions gives it a slightly transitional feel, and it's a common stop for people exploring both the Abruzzo and Molise coasts in the same trip.\n\nInland, San Salvo's town centre has a more workaday Italian character than the tourist-oriented centres further up the coast, which some visitors find a refreshing change from the resort towns further north - a beach day here comes without quite the same crowds or built-up seafront.
