Sauze d'Oulx

✈️ By air - Turin Caselle (TRN) is the closest airport, roughly 80 km and around 1h15 by road. Milan Malpensa (MXP) is around 230 km / 2h45. Both have winter transfer services in season.

🚗 By car - From Turin take the A32 towards Oulx, then follow signs up the short climb to Sauze d'Oulx. Winter tyres or chains are legally required in season.

🚆 By train + bus - The nearest station is Oulx-Cesana-Claviere-Sestriere on the Turin-Bardonecchia line, with regular buses (or the cable car from Oulx) up to Sauze d'Oulx in around 20 minutes. Total journey time from Turin Porta Nuova is roughly 2 hours.

🚶 Without a car - The village centre is compact and most lifts leave from it or from Sportinia above, so a car is not needed once you arrive.

Sauze d'Oulx sits above the town of Oulx in the Val di Susa, at 1,509m on a sunny balcony overlooking the valley. Unlike purpose-built Sestriere, it grew from an existing mountain village, so the centre still carries some of its old stone-roofed character alongside the ski infrastructure built up since the 1930s.

Since the 1970s the resort has been closely associated with British and Irish skiers, who nicknamed it "Suzy" and made its bars as much a draw as the slopes. The reputation was once rowdier than it is today; the nightlife is still lively, but the resort now attracts a broader mix of visitors alongside its traditional British following.

The skiing itself is largely tree-lined, which makes it a good option in poor visibility, and the runs down to the village from Sportinia and Clotes are among the longest wooded descents in the Vialattea. From Sauze d'Oulx the lift network links east towards Sestriere and west towards Sansicario, Cesana, Claviere and Montgenèvre in France, so a full day's circuit of the Milky Way is straightforward with an early start.

Off the slopes, the village has a dense cluster of bars, pubs and restaurants for its size, and the evening scene picks up noticeably over Christmas, New Year and February half-term. Outside peak weeks it settles into a quieter, more local pace, closer in feel to its neighbours elsewhere in the Vialattea.

🎫 Passes - The Vialattea pass covers Sauze d'Oulx, Sestriere and the rest of the linked area; decide between the local and international (Montgenèvre-inclusive) versions before you buy, and bring ID for the French side.

📅 When to go - January and February are the most snow-reliable months at this altitude; outside a strong snow year, early December and late March can be patchy lower down.

📆 Weekends - Like the rest of the Vialattea, Sauze is a popular day trip from Turin, so weekends and half-term weeks are busier than midweek.

🍸 Nightlife - Bars cluster along the main street in the village centre; expect a livelier, later evening scene here than in most other Vialattea resorts, especially over the Christmas and February peak weeks.
