A dramatic dark-sand beach in Maratea, with clear water, cliffs and one of Basilicata’s most distinctive coastal settings.
Spiaggia Nera, also known as Cala Jannita, is one of the most striking beaches in Maratea and one of the most unusual beaches in Basilicata. Set below cliffs on the Tyrrhenian coast, it is known for its dark volcanic-looking sand and pebbles, clear water and dramatic natural setting.
Free public access via the path down to the beach
Beach clubs available: Yes — sunbeds and umbrellas can usually be rented in season.
Sunbeds and umbrellas are limited, but this is more of a natural scenic beach than a fully organised resort beach.
By train: he nearest useful rail access is Maratea, but you will usually need a taxi, local bus or transfer to reach the beach from the station. This is not a simple train-to-beach option.
By bus: Local buses may run around Maratea and the coastal villages, especially in summer, but services can be limited. Check local timetables before relying on the bus.
Parking: Spiaggia Nera is easiest to reach by car or scooter from Maratea and the surrounding coastal area. Parking may be available nearby in season, but spaces can be limited in summer, so arrive early.
On foot: Access to the beach usually involves a path or steps down from the road/parking area. Pack lightly, especially if visiting in hot weather.
Spiaggia Nera is one of the most memorable beaches in Maratea. Also known as Cala Jannita, it stands out for its dark sand and pebbles, which create a dramatic contrast with the clear blue water and green cliffs around the bay. This is not a polished resort-style beach. The appeal is the setting: wild, scenic and slightly different from the classic golden beaches people often expect in southern Italy. The dark shoreline gives Spiaggia Nera a striking look, especially in photos, and makes it one of the most recognisable beaches in Basilicata. The water is usually clear and inviting, especially on calm days. It is a good beach for swimming, but the seabed can be pebbly and the water may deepen fairly quickly, so water shoes are useful and confident swimming is recommended. The rocky surroundings also make it a nice spot for snorkelling when conditions are good. Spiaggia Nera is best if you want a beach with atmosphere rather than lots of facilities. There may be seasonal services, but it is wise to bring water, snacks and anything else you need for the day. If you prefer an easier beach with more restaurants and beach clubs, Fiumicello is usually a more practical option in Maratea. For the best experience, visit early in the day or outside peak August. The beach is not huge, and its unusual setting makes it popular in summer. In June or September, it can feel much more relaxed while still giving you the full Maratea coastline experience.
