Overview

Vernazza's main beach sits right inside the village's natural harbour, framed by colourful tower-houses and the medieval Doria castle. The sand-and-pebble cove is small but free and public, with calm, shallow water that's great for a quick swim between hikes along the Sentiero Azzurro. A second, more sheltered beach (Spiaggia di Vernazza-Nuovo) appears beyond the rocks when the sea is calm.

How to get there

By train: Vernazza railway station - located just a 3-minute walk from the harbour and beach area on the Cinque Terre Express line. This is the easiest and most recommended way to reach Vernazza, with frequent regional connections from La Spezia and Levanto

By bus: No regular bus service reaches Vernazza directly due to the village’s steep terrain and protected location within the Cinque Terre National Park. Access is mainly by train, hiking trail, or seasonal ferry

Parking: No parking available inside Vernazza itself. Visitors arriving by car are strongly advised to leave vehicles in La Spezia or Levanto and continue by train, as road access is restricted and parking nearby is extremely limited

On foot: Easy, mostly flat 200-metre walk through the colourful village centre from the station to the harbour and beach

Practical tips

Don’t expect a big sandy stretch - it’s a small harbour beach, so it’s best enjoyed for a quick swim between walks or boat stops. In the evening, the harbour walls become a natural spot to sit, cool off, and watch the village light up.

More about Spiaggia di Vernazza

Spiaggia di Vernazza is one of the most atmospheric swimming spots in the Cinque Terre, set directly below the colourful harbour village of Vernazza. It is not a large beach, but a small and scenic place to swim, with clear water, dramatic cliffs and one of the most recognisable village backdrops on the Ligurian coast. The main appeal of Vernazza is the setting. The beach and harbour sit at the heart of the village, surrounded by pastel houses, fishing boats, terraces and steep hillsides. It is a beautiful place for a quick swim, a photo stop or a slow afternoon by the water, especially if you are already exploring the Cinque Terre by train or on foot. Spiaggia di Vernazza is small and mostly pebbly or rocky, depending on the exact swimming area and sea conditions. It is much less spacious than Monterosso al Mare Beach, so it is better for a scenic dip than a full beach day. Water shoes can be useful, and space can be limited in peak season. Vernazza is very easy to reach without a car. The village has its own train station on the Cinque Terre line, and the beach/harbour area is a short walk down through the village. This makes it one of the easiest places in the Cinque Terre to combine sightseeing, swimming, lunch, gelato and aperitivo in one visit. Because Vernazza is one of the most popular villages in the Cinque Terre, it gets very busy in July and August, especially during the middle of the day when day-trippers arrive. For a better experience, come early in the morning, later in the afternoon, or stay into the evening when the village starts to calm down. For the best experience, treat Spiaggia di Vernazza as a beautiful village swim stop rather than a classic beach day. Swim when the sea is calm, explore the lanes and harbour, then stay for focaccia, seafood, gelato or a sunset drink overlooking the water.
