Overview

Fossola is a free, undeveloped pebble beach hidden below the cliffs south of Riomaggiore. Reaching it takes a short but steep descent on a dirt path, which keeps the crowds away. How to get there

By train: iomaggiore railway station - then continue on foot for around 15 minutes south along the marked coastal path. This is the main and most practical access route within the Cinque Terre network, with frequent trains on the Cinque Terre Express line

By bus: No bus service reaches Spiaggia di Fossola directly. Public transport in Riomaggiore is limited due to the steep terrain and protected coastal environment

Parking: No parking available near the beach or along the access route. Visitors should park outside the Cinque Terre area (if arriving by car) and continue by train to Riomaggiore, as car access is heavily restricted

On foot: Around a 10–15 minute steep descent from Riomaggiore via a rocky, uneven coastal path. The trail includes steps and natural stone sections and is not suitable for buggies, large luggage, or visitors with limited mobility. Good footwear is strongly recommended, especially in hot or wet conditions

Practical tips

Don’t treat Fossola just like a normal beach day - treat it like a small boat adventure. Bring water shoes, goggles, water and snacks, and check the sea before you go. If the water is calm, this is exactly the kind of wild Cinque Terre swim spot that feels special because it takes a bit more effort to reach.

More about Spiaggia di Fossola

Spiaggia di Fossola is one of the wilder swimming spots near Riomaggiore, set along the rugged Tramonti coastline between the Cinque Terre and Porto Venere. It is very different from the easier town beaches of Monterosso or Levanto: small, rocky, remote and best suited to visitors looking for clear water, scenery and a more adventurous coastal stop. The beach is known for its natural setting, transparent water and quiet, dramatic coastline. It sits away from the main village beaches, which gives it a more hidden feel, but also makes access more complicated. Several local guides describe Fossola as reachable only by sea, with the old land access either closed or in poor condition. Spiaggia di Fossola is best visited by boat, either from Riomaggiore, Manarola or another nearby harbour, depending on local availability. This makes it a good option if you are planning a small boat trip along the Cinque Terre coast and want to stop somewhere quieter than the main villages. The shoreline is rocky and pebbly rather than sandy, so water shoes are strongly recommended. The sea can be beautifully clear on calm days, making Fossola a good choice for swimming and snorkelling, but it is not a low-effort beach with facilities, restaurants or easy access. Bring everything you need, including water, goggles and sun protection. Because access is limited, Spiaggia di Fossola feels more remote than many Cinque Terre beaches, but that also means you need to plan carefully. Sea conditions matter, and it is not a beach to visit casually if you are travelling with very young children or looking for a simple beach club day. For the best experience, visit in calm weather between late spring and early autumn. May, June and September are usually the best months if you want warm weather without the peak summer crowds. In July and August, book any boat or skipper early and check sea conditions before you go.
