More about Spiaggia dei Balzi Rossi

Spiaggia dei Balzi Rossi is one of the most striking beach spots in western Liguria, set in Grimaldi near Ventimiglia, just before the French border. Framed by red cliffs, pale rounded pebbles and clear blue water, it has a dramatic coastal setting that feels closer to the Côte d’Azur than a typical Ligurian town beach. The area is best known for its transparent sea, rocky scenery and the famous “Spiaggia delle Uova”, named after the smooth egg-shaped white pebbles along the shoreline. The water is usually the main reason to visit: on calm days it can be beautifully clear, making Balzi Rossi one of the most photogenic places to swim near Ventimiglia and the French Riviera. Balzi Rossi is not a wide or spacious beach. The coastline here is small, rocky and partly managed, with a mix of public access areas and private beach services nearby. This makes it better for a scenic swim, snorkelling and a special coastal stop than for a relaxed, low-effort family beach day. The beach is mostly pebbles and rocks, so water shoes are strongly recommended. The seabed can drop quite quickly in places, which makes the water feel wonderfully clear but also means it is better suited to confident swimmers than very young children. If you want to snorkel, bring goggles, as the rocky setting and clear water are part of what makes this beach special. Spiaggia dei Balzi Rossi is easiest to reach by car, although parking can be limited in peak season. Without a car, the nearest main station is Ventimiglia, with onward bus or taxi connections towards Grimaldi and the Balzi Rossi area. It also works well as a stop if you are staying in Ventimiglia, Bordighera, Menton or nearby towns on the French Riviera. For the best experience, visit in May, June or September, when the weather is warm but the beach is less crowded. In July and August, book any beach services ahead where needed, arrive early and treat Balzi Rossi as a small, scenic must-see spot rather than a large public beach.
