A hidden pebble cove beneath a medieval abbey, reachable only by boat or foot.
San Fruttuoso is one of the Mediterranean's most magical coves. A small pebble beach sits at the foot of a 10th-century abbey, accessible only by boat from Camogli or Portofino, or by a scenic two-hour hike.
Public beach access; abbey requires ticket
Beach clubs available: Yes — sunbeds and umbrellas can usually be rented in season.
By train: Camogli-San Fruttuoso railway station - then continue by ferry from Camogli harbour to San Fruttuoso Abbey (seasonal service, weather-dependent). This is the most popular and scenic access route in summer
By bus: Local buses run from Genoa and nearby towns to Camogli, where you can connect to ferry services. This option is useful if trains are limited, but still requires a boat or hike to reach the bay
Parking: No direct parking at San Fruttuoso - access is only by ferry, hiking trail, or private boat
On foot: Approx. 1.5–2 hour coastal hike from Camogli through Portofino Regional Park. The trail is steep in sections but highly scenic, with panoramic views over the Ligurian coast. A good fitness level and proper footwear are recommended
San Fruttuoso Beach is one of the most unique beaches in Liguria, set in a small cove between Camogli and Portofino. Surrounded by steep green hills, clear blue water and the historic Abbey of San Fruttuoso, it feels very different from a typical town beach and is one of the most memorable swimming spots on the Ligurian coast. The beach is small, scenic and atmospheric rather than spacious. Its main appeal is the setting: the abbey directly behind the beach, boats arriving into the bay, and the dramatic coastline of the Portofino Regional Park all around it. On calm days, the water can be beautifully transparent, making San Fruttuoso a wonderful place for swimming, snorkelling and photography. San Fruttuoso is not reachable by car, which is part of what makes it special. Most visitors arrive by boat from Camogli, Portofino, Rapallo or Santa Margherita Ligure, while more active visitors can hike through the Portofino Regional Park. Because access is more limited, the beach feels more remote than many Ligurian beaches, although it can still get very busy in summer. The shoreline is mainly pebbles and small stones, so water shoes are useful. The beach is good for swimming, but it is compact and can fill quickly when boats arrive, especially in July and August. It is better for a scenic swim and a memorable day trip than for a quiet, spacious beach day. San Fruttuoso works especially well as part of a wider coastal itinerary. You can combine the beach with a visit to the Abbey of San Fruttuoso, a boat trip from Camogli or Portofino, a hike through the Portofino Regional Park, or lunch by the water. It is one of the best beaches in Liguria if you want history, landscape and sea in one place. For the best experience, visit in May, June or September, when the weather is warm and the bay is usually less crowded than in peak summer. In July and August, arrive early by boat or plan your visit carefully, as San Fruttuoso is a popular must-see stop on the Ligurian coast.
