A long, protected stretch of fine sand on the Ionian coast, known as Salento's 'Caribbean' beach.
Punta Prosciutto is a roughly 4 km stretch of fine sand within a protected marine area on Salento's Ionian coast, part of the municipality of Porto Cesareo. It's often compared to the Caribbean for its pale sand and clear, shallow water, with the majority of the shoreline left free and undeveloped. A handful of beach clubs cluster at the northern end for anyone who wants sunbeds and food service.
About 80% of the beach is free and undeveloped. The main car parks sit outside the protected area, roughly a 10-minute walk from the sand.
Beach clubs available: Limited or seasonal — sunbeds and umbrellas may be available in summer.
A cluster of lidos operates at the northern end of the beach, offering sunbeds, umbrellas and bar service, while the majority of the shoreline remains free and unequipped.
By train: There's no direct train station at Punta Prosciutto; the nearest mainline station is Lecce, from where you'd need a car, taxi or bus for the rest of the way.
By bus: Seasonal buses run from Lecce towards Porto Cesareo in summer, though most visitors drive.
Parking: By car: From Lecce, follow signs for Porto Cesareo, then the coastal road (SP359) towards Torre Lapillo and the signed parking areas for Punta Prosciutto. Two main car parks serve the beach, both charging a seasonal fee; the northern one is larger and better signposted, and both fill by 9:30-10am on summer weekends.
On foot: From the main car parks outside the protected area, it's about a 10-minute walk to the sand.
Punta Prosciutto sits within a protected coastal area between Torre Colimena and Torre Lapillo, and the protection shows: this is one of the longest undeveloped stretches of sand left on Salento's Ionian coast, with around 80% of the shoreline free of any beach club. The sand is fine and pale, and the water is shallow and clear enough on calm days to earn the beach its 'Caribbean' comparisons. A cluster of lidos operates at the northern end, including well-known names offering sunbeds, umbrellas, bar service and changing facilities, so there's a proper full-service option if you want one. The rest of the beach is simply open sand and sea, which is unusual for this part of Puglia and part of why Punta Prosciutto has such a strong reputation. The main car parks sit outside the protected area's boundary, meaning a walk of around ten minutes to reach the sand - a small price for keeping the dunes and vegetation behind the beach intact. In July and August, both car parks fill by mid-morning on weekends, so timing matters more here than the walk itself. Punta Prosciutto suits anyone who wants space, pale sand and clear water without a wall of umbrellas - arrive early, and you'll have one of Salento's most scenic stretches largely to spread out on.
