Overview

Gavitella Beach is one of Praiano’s most scenic coastal spots, known for its clear water, dramatic views towards Positano and a rare west-facing position on the Amalfi Coast. Unlike many beaches on this stretch of coast, Gavitella gets sun until late in the day, making it a favourite for afternoon swims, beach clubs and sunset drinks.

Beach clubs available: Yes — sunbeds and umbrellas can usually be rented in season.

Gavitella is especially known for its beach clubs, sunbeds and seaside restaurant setting.

How to get there

By train: Can't reach by train. Some beach clubs may offer seasonal boat shuttles or transfers, depending on the booking and time of year.

By bus: SITA buses run along the Amalfi Coast road between Positano, Praiano and Amalfi. Get off in Praiano and walk towards the San Gennaro / Gavitella area before taking the staircase down to the beach.

Parking: You can drive or ride to Praiano, but parking is limited and can be difficult in summer. A scooter is easier than a car, but you will still need to walk down to the beach.

On foot: From central Praiano, Gavitella is reached by a scenic staircase of around 400 steps. The walk down is beautiful, but the return climb is steep, so avoid the hottest part of the day if possible.

Practical tips

Gavitella is especially good in the afternoon because it keeps the sun longer than many Amalfi Coast beaches, but avoid climbing back up during the hottest part of the day.

More about Gavitella Beach

Gavitella Beach is one of the best beaches in Praiano if you want clear water, long afternoon light and views back towards Positano. It is small, rocky and dramatic rather than wide and sandy, but that is part of its charm. From the beach and terraces, you can look across the sea towards Positano, Capri and the Li Galli islands, which makes it one of the most scenic spots on this side of the Amalfi Coast. The main reason people come to Gavitella is the sun. Because of its west-facing position, this is one of the few Amalfi Coast beaches that keeps the sunlight until late in the day, while many other coves fall into shade earlier. The official La Gavitella beach club describes it as one of the few beaches on the coast that enjoys sunlight until sunset. Gavitella is not a big beach. The shoreline is a mix of pebbles, rocks and bathing platforms, with limited free space and beach clubs taking up much of the area. It works best if you want a comfortable beach-club day, a swim with a view, or a late afternoon drink rather than a huge stretch of public beach. Getting there is part of the experience. From Praiano, the beach is reached by a long staircase of around 400 steps, starting near the centre of town around San Gennaro. The walk down is scenic, with sea views along the way, but the climb back up is something to keep in mind. Travel Amalfi Coast also notes that Gavitella is reached on foot from Piazza San Gennaro via narrow streets and a staircase of about 400 steps. For a special beach day, book one of the beach clubs and stay into the afternoon. Gavitella is at its best when the light softens, the sea turns golden and the views towards Positano feel even more dramatic. It is less practical than Marina di Praia and less famous than Positano’s beaches, but for sunset atmosphere, it is one of the most memorable beach spots on the Amalfi Coast.
