A scenic golden sand bay near Portoferraio, framed by hills and popular resort hotels.
Biodola sits on Elba's northern coast between Portoferraio and Procchio, a curved bay of fine golden sand backed by hotels, a campsite and Mediterranean scrub-covered hills. It's one of the island's most picturesque and popular beaches, mixing free sections with beach clubs. The scenic setting and easy resort facilities make it well suited to a relaxed beach day rather than a quiet escape.
Free public sections run alongside beach clubs along the bay. Space on the free part is tighter than the beach's overall length suggests, since hotels and a campsite occupy much of the land behind it.
Beach clubs available: Yes — sunbeds and umbrellas can usually be rented in season.
Several beach clubs operate along the bay, offering sunbeds, umbrellas, cabins and showers, alongside free public sections at either end.
By train: No direct train access. Elba has no railway, so this beach is not reachable by train.
By bus: Urban buses run from Portoferraio to Biodola, a straightforward option if you'd rather not deal with the small car park.
Parking: By car: From Portoferraio, follow signs for Procchio; after a few kilometres, a well-marked turn-off descends about 2 km to Biodola. The car park nearest the beach is small and fills quickly in summer. The approach road has been widened in places for extra parking, but arriving early is the most reliable option.
On foot: From the car park roughly 200 metres away, it's a short, flat walk down to the sand.
Biodola is often singled out as one of Elba's prettiest beaches, and the setting explains why: a curved bay of fine, golden quartz-and-mica sand sits beneath hills draped in Mediterranean scrub, with the water shifting through clear blues close to shore. It's a short, scenic drive from Portoferraio, descending through the landscape for a couple of kilometres before the bay opens up. The beach itself is around 560 metres long and is shared between free public sections and beach clubs offering umbrellas, sunbeds, cabins and showers. Hotels and a campsite sit directly behind much of the sand, which is part of what makes Biodola one of the more developed and popular resort beaches on the island - convenient if you're staying nearby, busier if you're hoping for solitude. Parking is the main constraint: the car park closest to the beach is small, only around 200 metres away, and fills quickly once summer gets underway. The road down to the beach has been widened in places to help, but arriving early is still the most reliable way to find a spot, and the beach is also served by urban buses from Portoferraio if you'd rather skip the parking question entirely. Biodola suits a straightforward, well-equipped beach day near Portoferraio more than a search for a quiet cove - if that's what you're picturing, the smaller, wilder beaches further along the northern coast are a better fit.
